Padua Franciscan High School is proud to welcome Fr. Michael Perry, OFM, the Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, as our 2014 Commencement Speaker on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Parma.
As Minister General, Fr. Michael Perry, OFM, is the servant-leader of 10,000 Franciscan friars worldwide. The 120th successor of St. Francis, his offices are located within the Curia Generale dei Frati Minori in Rome, Italy.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1954, Fr. Perry entered the Novitiate of the Province of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1977, made his Solemn Procession of Vows in 1981, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1984. His academic curriculum includes a PH.D. in Religious Anthropology from the University of Birmingham (England), M.A. in Theology, M.Div from Catholic Theological Union (Chicago), and a B.A. in History and Philosophy from Quincy University.
He served in the Franciscan mission in the southern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) where he was superior of a large mission, director of Franciscan formation, teacher, prison chaplain, research director and also a farmer for eight years. He also conducted research in the region of the Lower Congo for two years on the role of religion and spirituality in the daily lives of people.
